We are so glad you're interested in volunteering with Bloom House! We have a schedule open 24 hours a day, so we are an excellent location for an internship on your schedule. It's really crucial to have people in the building at all times, trained and able to help any youth who comes to the door - whether they just want a place to hang out for a while or they are in crisis.
Times of most need are: Evenings 6-11pm and overnights 11pm-7am and all day Sundays.
Snacks and drinks are always provided!
What does a day at Bloom House look like? It varies! It might be very quiet and slow - feel free to work on projects around the house, read a book or watch TV (family-friendly), and work on homework if there are no youth in the house at the time. On the other hand, if a homeless or runaway youth comes in in distress - you will be trained to handle that, and staff will be available - you don't have to do intakes on your own (unless graduate students or undergraduate seniors with experience and confidence in intakes). If we have youth staying in shelter, then your day will depend on the time - in the morning you might help make breakfasts, help get youth who are still in school up and ready and to to the buss on time, or at night you may be making rounds around the house just checking that everyone is doing well. You might be helping make dinner, showing a youth guest how to use the washer or other life skills, or you might be running a group activity or facilitating a movie night!
Here's a day in the life of an intern, made by Camrie Sparling, former intern and graduate of the rehabilitation and disability services program , featuring Cheyann Benn, former intern and graduate of the art therapy program - both at Emporia State University!
See a video about what it's like on overnights as well in the next video!

working or retired professional looking to volunteer?
Email us about you and your interest and we will chat!
As with the interns, due to the nature of the guests at our shelter being vulnerable youths, you will need to submit your background check results prior to volunteering. After we receive your email or phone call, we will email you the instructions for how to do that!
